Overview

Child Neurology, also known as Pediatric Neurology, is a branch of specialization that aims to prevent, diagnose and treat brain, spinal cord, nerve and muscle diseases in children between the ages of 0-18, newborns, premature babies, infants, school children and adolescents. Many diseases such as brain damages that show symptoms in the womb, during birth or afterwards, stroke-paralysis, neurological developmental disorders (motor developmental delay, cognitive delay, speech delay), seizures, epilepsy, nonepileptic recurrent events (tic disorders, breath-holding spells, etc.), dizziness, headache, muscle and muscle-nerve junction diseases (Duchenne-Becker muscular dystrophy, Limb girdle muscular dystrophy, congenital myopathy, congenital muscular dystrophy, congenital myasthenic syndrome, etc.), neuropathies and neurological conditions accompanying psychiatric diseases (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autistic spectrum disorder, etc.) are the areas of interest of this department. Since growth and development continue in the 0-18 age group, children in this group are followed up in the neurology department at certain periods. For diagnosis, first the patient’s history is listened to in detail and a clinical evaluation is made. With the physical examination, general condition, age-appropriate reactions, eye movements, head size, cranial nerves, motor power, tone and reflexes, as well as balance and sensory system are evaluated. The child/patient’s speech, movement and cognitive ability are examined. After the clinical evaluation and examination, the tests to be performed are determined according to the physician’s request.

Routine blood tests, electroencephalography (EEG), nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG), magnetic resonance or computerized tomography imaging, transfontanel ultrasonography, muscle and skin biopsy, metabolic tests and some special genetic analyses (karyotype, microarrayCGH, gene panels, WES-WGS) can be listed as diagnostic methods. It is decided which tests will be given priority in the patient’s follow-up, and a stepwise diagnostic algorithm is followed according to the follow-up.

FAQ

What is pediatric neurology?

Pediatric neurology is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing and treating nervous system disorders in children, including issues with the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles, from infancy through adolescence.

Which conditions are treated in the Pediatric Neurology Department?

Our pediatric neurologists care for a wide range of neurological conditions, including:

Epilepsy and seizures

Developmental delays and intellectual disabilities

Cerebral palsy

Headaches and migraines

Neuromuscular disorders (e.g., muscular dystrophy)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD

Movement disorders (e.g., tics, dystonia)

Brain infections (e.g., meningitis, encephalitis)

Sleep disorders

Stroke or brain injury in children

When should I take my child to a pediatric neurologist?

You should consult a pediatric neurologist if your child experiences:

Seizures or fainting episodes

Delays in speaking, walking, or motor skills

Unusual movements or muscle weakness

Sudden behavior or mood changes

Chronic headaches or vision problems

Poor school performance linked to attention or memory

Unexplained loss of previously acquired skills

What diagnostic tests are used to evaluate neurological conditions?

Our department uses advanced, child-friendly diagnostics, including:

Electroencephalogram (EEG) for seizure detection

Brain MRI and CT scans

Nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG)

Developmental and neuropsychological assessments

Genetic and metabolic tests for inherited disorders

Are seizure disorders and epilepsy treatable in children?

Yes. Most pediatric seizure disorders can be managed effectively with:

Anti-seizure medications

Lifestyle modifications and safety planning

Ketogenic diet (for certain seizure types)

Surgical or device-based options in resistant cases (in collaboration with neurosurgery)

Do you offer care for developmental and behavioral disorders?

Yes. We provide evaluation and management of conditions like:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Learning disabilities
We work with psychologists, special educators, and therapists to provide comprehensive developmental support.

How is cerebral palsy managed at Medical Point?

Our approach includes:

Accurate diagnosis and classification

Medication for spasticity or seizures

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy

Orthopedic and neurosurgical collaboration when needed
