Types of Implants
Check out the most popular types of implants in general:
Types by content or padding:
- Silicone implants: The most frequently used 90% of the time. It has proven to be safest material for breast implantions.
- Saline implants (physiological saline): They have the advantage of reabsorption material in case of breakage.
Types according to the stickiness of the silicone gel:
- Generally silicone gels are sticky in nature to prevent migration in the case of breakage. They can be of low, medium, high or stable cohesion. The lower the stickiness, the softer and less durable the shape. Depending on the shape of the breast prostheses, there are different options to suit each patient’s taste and anatomy:
- Round: The most used and traditional ones. Each skin has different profiles: Low, medium, high, and ultra-high. The higher the height, the smaller the diameter of the implant.
- Anatomical: They’re oval-shaped prostheses in the form of tears or water drops. It can change its shape in three dimensions, length, width, and height.
Types by coverage or packaging:
- Smooth: They have a higher risk of encapsulation in the subglandular plane. They can be placed with less scarring, have a softer touch, and have a lower incidence of infections and post-operative seromas.
- Textured or rough: There is less risk of encapsulation. They have a more uneven touch and less chance of displacement.
- Microtexturing: More modern, with less encapsulation risk and better contact.
- Polyurethane: They surround the silicone wrap ensuring it does not separate. They are designed to reduce the risk of capsules forming. A capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue surrounding the implant becomes smaller. This makes the implant to feel hard and if the capsule is severe, it can become painful.
