Smart Lens Surgery

If the person has cataract and wants to see both far and far without glasses after cataract surgery, smart lens is the first choice. The smart lens is put in the same place in the eye where we removed the person's natural lens.

What is a smart lens?

Smart Lens is known as trifocal lens, which is a more accurate term than smart lens. A smart lens is an artificial trifocal lens implanted in the eye during cataract surgery. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens over time or for the different reasons I described about cataracts.

Normally, the lens of a young person or a healthy eye can see all distances, such as far-mid-close. The function of our lenses begins to decline as we age. The main goal of cataract surgery is to replace a naturally cloudy lens with a new artificial lens.

Why do we need Smart Lenses?

When the cloudy lens is dislodged, this eye will need a new lens. If we are not wearing new lenses, the patient should definitely wear glasses. For this reason, we wear a new lens in every cataract surgery. Considering the patient's medical condition, we decide which lens to use for the patient.

The best decision should always be a lens with similar functions to the natural lens. Trifocal lenses, on the other hand, are the lenses most similar to our natural lenses. Trifocal GIL implants provide great comfort to patients and eliminate all life-related vision problems. It is suitable for young patients who are not suitable for trifocal IOL laser surgery, have low vision, use prescription glasses, and do not want to wear glasses.

What are the types of smart lenses?

Trifocal lenses are the newest type of smart lenses. Trifocal lenses provide clear vision for farsighted, intermediate (astigmatic) and myopia. It can be seen easily at a distance of 30-80 cm. If an astigmatic defect is detected before surgery, toric lens application is performed.

The closer the view of the smart lens is moved, the greater the sensation of seeing the brightness around the light. There are also different types of lenses, also known as AddOn Lenses. These lenses for eyes that used monofocal lenses years ago. If the patient uses monofocal lenses for myopia and now has hyperopia and wants to get rid of glasses, AddOne Lens can be applied.

There are smart lenses with different features depending on the brands of the lenses. I use FDA-approved, American-made smart lenses in my clinic. I never offer lenses produced in countries that we can call 3rd world countries or newly produced lenses that we do not have experience with, even as a recommendation for the use of patients in our clinic.
